Quiet City Chamber Ensemble Call for Scores

The Quiet City Chamber Ensemble is excited to announce its first ever call for scores. We invite composers to participate in our 2014-2015 concert season by submitting chamber works for our unique instrumentation (saxophone, clarinet, trumpet and piano).

Based on the original instrumentation for Aaron Copland’s Quiet City, The Quiet City Chamber Ensemble was formed by Christopher Brellochs in 2010. Brellochs crafted a concert version of Quiet City using the unpublished manuscript of the incidental music, which included previously unheard material. Their recording, Quiet City has been well received with significant national radio play and features on APM’s Performance Today and NPR’s Weekend Edition.

The call for scores is designed to generate new works for the ensemble’s unique instrumentation. Please visit www.facebook.com/QuietCityChamberEnsemble and www.christopherbrellochs.com to listen to samples of our work. This call is open to all student composers. Works can be of any length but preference will be given to works that are under 15 minutes. Works written for the entire ensemble will be given preference, though works written for subsets (no fewer than three performers) will be considered. The work must be previously unperformed and unpublished.

The winner of the competition will receive rehearsals, premiere, and archival recording by the ensemble in the 2014-2015 season. The work may also be added the permanent repertoire for upcoming tours and future recording. The Quiet City Chamber Ensemble reserves the right to name additional finalists whose work will be considered for future programming. The winner will be chosen by the Quiet City Chamber Ensemble and outside panelists. The results of the competition will be announced on September 1, 2014.

How do you honor a 25 year musical relationship? Well, here is something that I'm excited about! I studied classical saxophone at Ithaca College with Steve Mauk when I was working on my undergraduate college degree. He discovered all sorts of "holes" in my technique and approach to playing the instrument that he adeptly patched. His musicianship and clearly organized approach to teaching have served as a model for my entire career, both as a performer and educator. I couldn't be more pleased that he will be performing my version of Aaron Copland's "Quiet City" on his faculty recital this coming Sunday, September 22, 2013 at 4pm in Ithaca, New York at Ithaca College's Hockett Family Recital Hall. He graciously invited me to say a few words about the piece so I will be speaking there! Click on images below for more information:

The sheet music for the newly reconstructed chamber version of "QUIET CITY" is now available! Mega-music distributer Hal Leonard has them hot off the presses. As the arranger, I received six complimentary copies and had them overnighted to me on March 13 so that I could take the scores to my lecture, 'Aaron Copland’s Forgotten Score Reemerges: The original Chamber Version of “Quiet City”', at the North American Saxophone Alliance conference that weekend. Perfect timing!
Artist Keith R. Breitfeller's colorful pieces seemed to "pop" out of the concrete/muted colors of the gallery. My improvisation on soprano saxophone makes use of a technique called slap tongue, which results from the release of suction in the mouth and the popping sound that the reed then produces which is then amplified as it travels through the horn.

I responded immediately to the colors and texture employed by artist Keith R. Breitfeller. In the industrial style gallery these "pops" of color made a strong impression. After the performance, which started with "Melodies for Saxophone" by Philip Glass, Keith told me that he often listens to Glass while painting. I was happy to hear that, since it meant to me that I had correctly identified a real connection between the art and music in that space.

Here is part two of my four part blog about my recent performance at the Perkins Center for the Arts in Collingswood, New Jersey. First, my brother and I decided that I would play one composed and one improvised piece in three locations in the gallery to highlight each of the artist's work being exhibited. Second, we chose what pieces would go with which art works. The next step was to develop a "choreography" on how to move the saxophones from one location to the next, what stands I would need, and general logistics for performing in multiple locations. We sketched out the following to help us:

I had a wonderful and gratifying musical experience on Saturday, August 11 when I performed music to accompany art. My brother is a visual artist and was part of a three person exhibition at the Perkins Center for the Arts in Collingswood, New Jersey (just outside of Philadelphia).

While on a family vacation earlier in the summer we brainstormed about collaborating, and came up with some ideas on how I could perform in and around the artworks on display. I looked at some images from the exhibit and started practicing some composed pieces that I thought would relate well. Since it would be solo saxophone I quickly decided that I wanted to provide a variety of timbres by performing on all four of the more common saxophones - soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone. I then decided that in case I couldn't find something already written that would compliment the artworks on display that I would also be prepared to improvise and allow the artwork to inspire me. This would make it my first performance ever where I played all four saxophone AND performed both improvised and composed music.

I posted some of the art images on FACEBOOK and asked for some ideas on what instrument to use and what storyline might accompany each work; I had some insightful and interesting responses (thank you)!

The day before the performance I meet my brother at the gallery and we spent three hours discussing possibilities and trying out different combinations of music and art. Our performance program and order came together that evening and we jotted down on a scrap piece of paper. We decided that I would play one composed and one improvised piece in three locations which would be in close proximity to each of the artists work.

We decided that I would begin by performing "Melodies for Saxophone" by Philip Glass on the baritone saxophone on the second floor loft where viewers could see me from the gallery floor. That was followed by performing "Balfon from Neuf Etudes" by Christian Lauba and an improvisation in the center of two curving 20 foot drawings.

The past two weekends have been filled with "All Things Copland". A good friend who works at the Tanglewood music festival in the beautiful Berkshires of Massachusetts, took me to their Copland Library. I asked the head librarian if there was anything a Copland scholar and fan should see; he showed me a number of scores that were bequeathed from the estate of Aaron Copland, as well as a library check out card. Note who the first person was to check out the score!

"Copland: Quiet City — Christopher Brellochs and Paul Cohen, saxophones (Sono Luminus) — I’ve probably played this recording more often, with more pleasure, than any other classical or jazz recording I’ve acquired over the last year. Truth is, the music bridges the borderline between classical and jazz with its modern, syncopated rhythms and its emphasis on the sax. Brellochs plays an ultra-smooth alto sax on a world premiere of Aaron Copland’s Quiet City in its original quartet version. Cohen, who actually unearthed the Copland manuscript, plays alto on Leo Ornstein’s Ballade, tenor on Walter S. Hartley’s Lyric Suite, and soprano on Lawson Lunde’s Sonata for Soprano Saxophone and Piano — all of these recorded for the first time. Brellochs appears with his alto on all the lengthiest premieres, including Robert Aldridge’s Sound Moves Blues, Seymour Barab’s Suite for Trumpet, Alto Saxophone and Piano, and the Copland. Donald Batchelder on trumpet, Mitchell Kriegler on clarinets, and Allison Brewster Franzetti at the keyboard are the other notable contributors to this tasty chamber music feast." - Perry Tannenbaum

On Saturday, September 17 at 7:30 pm, saxophonist and composer Christopher Brellochs presents a concert celebrating the CD release Quiet City, a world premiere recording of music by Aaron Copland and other American 20th century composers. The concert, at Christ Episcopal Church, 20 Carroll St, Poughkeepsie, features Brellochs and his new adaptation of Aaron Copland's Quiet City. Although Quiet City has been an orchestral favorite for 70 years, Brellochs recently discovered the unpublished manuscript of incidental music to the play. He adapted the score, using the original instrumentation and restoring musical themes that have never before been heard. At this concert, Brellochs will describe his journey with this composition from incidental music to world premiere recording.

REVIEW by V. Vasan

Quiet City is anything but quiet, dull, or boring. Saxophonist Christopher Brellochs and his fellow musicians create an extremely enjoyable album of music by Copland and other American composers to whom they wish to give exposure. The title work is poignant, with the trumpet and clarinets contributing to the melancholy, somber mood: the musicians capture a sense of seriousness and quiet gravity that is at the same time accessible to the listener. When the music turns lively, Brellochs and the others are able to shift into that emotion easily, adding the bass clarinet for more color. Brellochs has done a good job both in his performing of the work and in its adaptation. The smoky, seductive Ballade by Ornstein is nocturnal in its feel, and fits in nicely with the Copland. Especially exciting is Aldridge's Sound Moves Blues, which is a nice contrast to the previous two pieces. It most certainly moves and swings like jazz. The addition of the violin makes for quite a stark contrast when the Lyric Suite by Hartley begins. Its dissonant introduction leads into beautiful tone colors in the saxophone and piano. The "Scherzino" whirls like a busy bee, and the piano never hits a false note in the flurry. One can certainly generalize that none of the musicians ever hit a false note, not even in the rapid dotted rhythms of the "Gigue." The two-movement Sonata for Soprano Saxophone and Piano is lyrical, with a graceful melody in the saxophone (which Paul Cohen plays as smoothly as a clarinet or flute.) The musicians' agility is especially evident in the second movement, which sounds like a jig; the piano is a solid, assured, confident partner to the sprightly saxophone. Composer Lunde clearly understood the way to get the best out of the tone color of each instrument. The album concludes with the Suite for Trumpet, Alto Saxophone and Piano by Barab, a densely-textured work of five movements with close-knit lines in the various instruments. The musicians work beautifully together, virtually chasing each other in the "Allegro." Their emotion is genuine and open, which serves to engage the listener. Kudos to Brellochs and his collaborators for their good musicianship as well as excellent choice of repertoire.

I mentioned that I lived in NYC for eight years and played at Birdland a few times, at which point he interrupted me saying, "I've played at Birdland...with Bird!"
Audio excerpt of "Quiet City" available under "Music".

The Copland Estate and Boosey & Hawkes (Copland’s Publisher) have recognized the unique value and authentic nature of a new concert version of Aaron Copland’s Quiet City, and will be adding it to their catalogue in spring 2010.

Accomplished saxophonist, scholar, and teacher Christopher Brellochs currently has the exclusive right to perform and record this new version of Quiet City and is excited to share this amazing music with audiences. This historically relevant piece has taken an intriguing journey from incidental music to the concert stage. For the first time ever we can examine and enjoy one of the most beloved masterpieces by an iconic American composer in its entirety and for the original chamber ensemble.

In 1939 Aaron Copland composed incidental music for a play by Irwin Shaw called The Quiet City. The play was cancelled after two tryout performances. Although the original manuscript has never been published, it yielded material for two works. First was the well-known concert version of Quiet City (1940) for trumpet, English horn, and string orchestra; second was the Academy Award nominated film score to Our Town (1940). Both works utilized only a portion of the original music. Coinciding with the seventieth anniversary of Copland’s orchestral version of Quiet City, there is a new concert version by Christopher Brellochs that includes all the musical material from the unpublished manuscript and preserves the original chamber ensemble of trumpet, alto saxophone, Bb clarinet (doubling with bass clarinet), and piano. This is not an arrangement but a new adaptation including previously unheard, original music.

Christopher Brellochs is available to appear as a guest saxophonist either with resident musicians or with his own chamber ensemble. Performance options include presenting this 14 minute adaptation as part of an existing program, in a full-length recital, or coupled with his lecture, “Aaron Copland’s Quiet City: Bringing Previously Unheard Music to Light”. To schedule a performance, lecture, or recording please contact Christopher Brellochs at: email: cb@christopherbrellochs.com website: www.christopherbrellochs.com

I am very happy to announce that I have been hired as the Chair of the Music Certificate Program and Department Supervisor of Music at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, New York (about 2 hours north of New York City). I will be teaching Music Theory I & II, Aural Skills, Music History, Jazz History, and conducting the Jazz Ensemble beginning in Fall 2008. I will also supervise the adjunct music faculty and be in charge of curriculum and recruiting.
I started this job search exactly one year ago and want to especially thank all the people who stuck by me during the long haul, providing me with invaluable advice and recommendations - special thanks to William Berz, Maureen Hurd, Paul Cohen, Mark Terenzi, and Zende Clark.
I will be moving to the area in August, so if anyone knows the area and has any recommendations on where to live (Poughkeepsie, Beacon, etc.) and suggestions on where to look for availability, that would be great. I am looking to rent a small house or apartment; of course as a musician, being able to play music - along with fairly easy access to NYC and the area - is important.

This fall has been very busy with the beginning of a new school year and research writing.
I recently submitted an article called, "Aaron Copland's Use of the Saxophone in Wind Band Repertoire" to the Journal of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles which should be published soon.
